A tram dedicated to Volgograd will start circulating through Chemnitz

In July 2020, Chemnitz – Volgograd’s partner-city in the Eastern Germany – has made another step towards creating an accessible and inclusive transportation system. The City has purchased and put into operation 14 new low-floor vehicles, which substituted the previous models with less considerate exit and entrance.

Furthermore, by the end of the year, Chemnitz is planning to have each of the new trams named after one of its partner-cities, and adorn the transport’s interiors with their logos and historical fatcs.

Volgograd commended and fully supported their foreign partners’ initiative: for its own residents, a street car is one of the favorite means of transports, as it has accompanied our city since 1913, serves both as a regular and an underground tram, protects from summer heat and provides the fastest connection between remote city districts.

Soon, every ride in one of the new street cars will remind the residents of our partner-city about their Russian friends and colleagues.

Let us be reminded that in 2020, Chemnitz will be competing for the title of the European City of Culture. We hope that this initiative will further cement its reputation of a hospitable, open-minded and international city, as well as strengthen our partnership.
