1,700 people watched the Online Festival of Japanese Culture in Volgograd
On September 20, 2020, from 12 o’clock to 5 pm, the 8th School Alternative Festival of Japanese Culture better known under the title of the “Japanese Cupboard”. As previously, it was organized by the creative associations and artistic groups of the city and its region and supported by the International and regional relations directorate of Volgograd Mayor’s Office.
This time, the festival was dedicated to the Russian-Japanese Year of Interregional and Sister-Cities’ Exchanges. Due to the public limitations introduced because of the COVID pandemic, the Festival’s traditional rooms transformed into online lectures and interactive games.
At the same time, a pre-recorded series of lectures and master classes was being broadcasted on the Festival’s Twitch channel and in the event’s VKontakte public group, and festured videos about tea ceremony, Japanese literature, history and the making of kimono, cooking tayaki bund and the first Russian youth magazines about anime and manga.
The coordinator of the Festival was the ”Volgograd – Hiroshima” Friendship Society: its input was also a lecture on the consequences of the A-bombing and its reflections in popular culture, an interactive quiz on Hiroshima and simpler quizzes on Japanese culture.
For the first time, the event featured a participation of the “Russia – Japan” Society (Volgograd branch): its chair Elena Samigulina introduced a lecture about Japanese mythology and what we know about it.
The Chair of the International Youth Conference for Peace in the Future Dr. Kouki Inai and a Hiroshima State University student Ms. Shuka Ose had kindly prepared for the residents of their sister-city a musical performance and a Q&A session about the daily life of Japanese young people.
The Festival’s broadcast has been viewed by more than 1,700 people.
